Pancreatitis is inflammation of the pancreas, the organ that helps digest food and control blood sugar. It usually causes severe tummy pain, often with vomiting.
Common causes include gallstones, infections, injury, certain medicines, genetic changes and problems with the shape of the pancreas or bile ducts. Sometimes no cause is found.
Most children recover with fluids, pain relief and early nutrition. Children with repeated attacks need tests to find the cause and a long-term plan to prevent further episodes.
