Understanding Coeliac Disease In Children
Coeliac disease is a common autoimmune condition triggered by gluten in genetically susceptible children. Early recognition and diagnosis can help prevent nutritional deficiencies, growth concerns and long-term complications.
Persistent tummy pain, bloating, diarrhoea, constipation, tiredness, poor growth or unexplained iron deficiency may warrant further assessment.
Diagnosis often begins with blood tests while the child continues eating gluten. In some cases, further investigations may be recommended to confirm the diagnosis.

Usually, yes. Tiny samples are taken painlessly from the lining of the gut, even if it looks normal, as they can show changes not visible to the eye.
Your child will need to stop eating and drinking for a few hours beforehand. For a colonoscopy, a bowel preparation is also needed. You will receive clear instructions before the day.
Most children go home the same day, usually within a few hours once they are awake, comfortable and able to drink.
We share what we see straight after the procedure. Biopsy results usually take one to two weeks and are discussed at a follow-up appointment.
Paediatric endoscopy is a routine and safe procedure when performed by trained specialists. Serious complications are rare, and we explain all risks before you give consent.
